John Yianni, designer of Hive and Army of Frogs, has a new boardless creation debuting at Spiel 08: Logan Stones. The game consists of 18 pieces with two of the three rock-paper-scissors icons etched on opposite sides, and the name of the game comes from the design of these pieces. Logan stones, for those who don't know, are large stones that are so delicately balanced on other stones that only a light touch is needed to start them rocking. Since players need to move the pieces and often look at both sides of them, they have a thin lip on the edge to allow players to pry them up.

As for the game play, two players create a communal board of pieces, trying to create a line of four identical symbols, but since you share the pieces – pieces that are constantly being flipped to reveal the hidden face -- you need a decent memory to pair with your tactical skills.

The rules in more detail: Each player draws eight pieces from the bag, placing them so that the opponent can see only one of the faces. Without looking at the backside of the remaining two pieces, place them next to one another. Players take turns adding one piece to the board, with each added piece touching two others. If the added piece outranks pieces already in place, those pieces are flipped to their other side. If all pieces have been placed, you can move or flip a piece on your turn. The first player to get four symbols in a row wins.
